The festival called Docudays on Human Rights was held for the first time in 2003. At that time the program included documentaries and feature films. Most of them were Ukrainian premieres. From the beginning, the organizers were sure that the films would not only be screened in the capital, but also in the regions of Ukraine.
The second festival was held in 2005 and had the subtitle of ‘Ukrainian Context’. This time the program consisted mainly of non-fiction films. The festival started out on a tour of the regions of Ukraine after the shows at the Cinema House in Kiev. This is how the Docudays on Human Rights Traveling Festival began.
The next year, ‘Ukrainian Context’ was accepted as part of the international Human Rights Film Network (HRFN) at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA).
In 2006, the festival was judged by a jury for the first time, and the next year Ukrainian journalists also awarded their prizes. In 2008 the program was divided into two competitions: creative and the human rights, and since that time the festival has also had two juries: the creative competition jury and the human rights competition jury. Furthermore, in 2008 the festival was renamed as the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. The festival is traditionally held during the last week of March in Kyiv’s Cinema House.
